Upper Heyford airbase was built in 1918 to serve the RAF. During the Cold War the Americans were based here and it was used as a base for the United States Air Force Strategic Force Command until 1994 when the base was closed. Some of the buildings have English heritage status and some have been taken over for light industry. The site is under pressure for housing. You can explore the site as part of an organised excursion. The photographs were taken with a digital camera converted to infrared which suits hard structures of this type.
